John Jaeckel: Reports On Six Hawk CHL Prospects - John Jaeckel
John, how the heck are you?
With this friggin lockout, I miss my annual trips to Columbus and therein lies some of the problem. When I can drive from Chicago to Columbus, get GREAT seats for the Hawks game there, stay at a really nice hotel, go out to eat and STILL have all of that (gas included) cost less than me driving down to the UC and paying for similar seats, well then, something is wrong with that picture.
I think I am at the point as many are, this season is toast and I wonder if we'll see NHL hockey any time in the next few years. I suppose it doesn't matter anymore but it really sucks since I could care less about either MLB team in town, the NBA (Bulls) is really not much diversion without D Rose (and little chance for success w/o him either).
Ah crap. Hope you and yours are well and if the league starts up any time soon within the next decade, hope to say hi.
Oh yeah, 1st!

Cool update JJ, and thanks, this place is starting to feel like it used to...Any news on Kevin Hayes? What you think might come of him etc...If you don't have any info do you think the Wiz does?
And do you think of the last offer by Bettman, players/owners only meeting? And what is your take on Rogers no longer being the espn Hawks guy? Have any idea if that is a demtion goin from Blackhawks to Cubs? |

That would be a promotion, IMO. Jesse is a good guy. I think you're just seeing these outlets find better uses for guys like Jesse and Adam Jahns (also a good guy) since this strike happened.
I have grown very skeptical of anything Fehr and Bettman do— feels like it's all p.r. posturing, ie: "I did everything I could." But I do think removing them from the process—in a substantive and meaningfu way—would be a good thing.
I will look into how to get a read on Hayes' progress. Maybe some sources who see a lot of Hockey East games.

Hey Dennis,
Gotta say, I am really enjoying the focus on the CHL and AHL. AHL hockey this year with each team having a handful of legit NHL players is pretty good.
Hope you and yours are well, too.

IMO, some more than others. Seems like some of these guys go down and stay down. hey whatever works. Carruth is definitely one of those guys like Huet, Crawford, Emery, Luongo, etc who spends a lot of time down on his pads. What I look for in guys like that is how well they move and get in and out of the down position. In that regard, I like Carruth, who also has decent size. Did not see him really tested in what I saw last night.
Another Hawk G prospect I am trying to monitor is Johan Mattson who is at Tri-City in the USHL. He is 4th or 5th in that league in save% and GAA. Honestly, all I have on him is second hand. He was the third G on the Swedish WJC Gold team last year. Got good reviews for basically saving a defensively horrible team at Sudbury last year. Has really good size.

We are, thanks.
Appreciate your work on the youngsters -- they played in one of the rinks (West Meadows in Rolling Meadows) that is one of the rinks we play at in our men's league. I was going to go to the Hogs/Wolves game but a good friend found out my boy Leddy was not slated (and a few others I wanted to see) to be on the ice that night. I probably should have gone anyway but the past AHL games I've seen (w/o the current NHLers) were never very much fun to watch.
Didn't want to clutter up w/another post:
Philco: thanks for the shout-out! Hope you are well too. Like pretty much all the guys here, I miss our chatter about our Hawks. And probably like everyone else, I am finding other things that fill my time but I do miss NHL hockey. I think John's focus on our draft picks in AHL, etc is certainly great and should help my hockey jones a bit. |

I saw him play against the Steel back in September. There is a discussion of that game, with some comments on Mattson, at:

Of all the goalies you mentioned...i note they have ZERO Cups between them. Carruth is a nice prospect but i'm tired of goalies who go out for Halloween wearing a Monica Lewinsky mask. STAND UP or be a hybrid like 3-time Cup winner Marty Brodeur.
Saw Mattson play a few last years for "Suds"-bury. Good size, average puck stopper.

While down, Bobby Sanguinetti of Charlotte leaned over to check on him and Marcus Kruger of all people came to Saad’s defense, albeit against the wrong guy.
From Chris Block's game summary, loving Kruger more and more!!! |

Hey JJ, what about Garret Ross? Have you been able to keep track of him at all? I know he is in his 4th season at Saginaw, just wanted to hear your opinion of him |

Marty St. Pierre had a nice night. A pair of snipes, including a beauty off a sweet feed from Jimmy Hayes..and a fight to boot. He got whipped in the tilt, but he at least he dropped the mittens like a cap'n should.

Might be just me but Kruger and Morin both seem to be keeping their heads up more. Pirri got plastered last night though.
